The Law Enforcement Torch Run is the most important annual fundraiser benefiting Special Olympics in the world. It also raises public awareness of the cause of people living with an intellectual disability. More than 85,000 policemen, policewomen and peace officers carry the Flame of Hope in 35 countries.
The Law Enforcement Torch Run was launched by a Kansas sheriff, Mr. Richard LaMunyon, who wanted to raise funds to support the Special Olympics cause. He thought that a torch run would be a good way to get peace officers involved in their community and in the Special Olympics movement. After only three years, the event was a success locally and the sheriff introduced the International Association of Chiefs of Police to his program. He immediately obtained the association’s support and since then, police officers, customs officers, correctional officers and peace officers everywhere have chosen the Special Olympics movement as their corporate cause.
Participating in the many representation and fundraising activities held during the Law Enforcement Torch Run annual campaign helps special athletes make their dreams come true. It gives them the opportunity to compete and surpass themselves. Thanks to your involvement, more and more disabled people will have the right to dream, enter the job market and become more self-sufficient.

In order to encourage the organization of fundraising events, the provincial committee has set up a recognition program through which those who organize events and recruit sponsors can earn various rewards depending on the value of their accomplishments.
The highest accolade is the chance to attend the Law Enforcement Torch Run international conference… and especially give athletes the opportunity to train and compete within the Special Olympics network! The organizations that have raised the most money will see the name or their department or unit added to the Honour Board.
