The 41st Canada Winter Games – Whitehorse 2007

An enriching experience for four athletes from Québec

Québec athletes excelled at the 41st Canada Games held in Whitehorse, Yukon, from March 4 to 10, 2007. This was the second time that Québec special athletes participated in figure skating and the first time that Special Olympics Québec brought back medals from this national competition. We wish to pay tribute to our four athletes for their outstanding performances.

Annie Boulanger has been a member of the Baie-Comeau figure skating club for the past six years. Last March, this dedicated 23-year-old competed at the Canada Games for the second time and all her efforts were rewarded. After finishing second in the required elements and first in the free skate event, Annie won the women’s level II competition. Congratulations, Annie, for your outstanding performance, your enthusiasm and most of all for your gold medal!

Simon Dionne started figure skating in 1995. He trains at the Cendrillon figure skating club in Trois-Rivières. After a notable performance at the 2004 National Winter Games in Prince-Edward-Island, Simon clinched the bronze medal in the men’s level III division at the March 2007 Canada Games. We therefore congratulate Simon for his third place finish. This is an excellent performance for this 18 year-old athlete from the Mauricie region.

Zane Salera-Nasra has been training at the St-Léonard figure skating club since 2000. Dynamic and cheerful, Zane knows how to share his enthusiasm and passion for skating with the other athletes. At the Canada Games, he won the gold medal in figure skating in the men’s level III category. It was a victory that this young 15 year-old athlete certainly earned! He managed to stay focussed throughout the Games. Kudos for your well-deserved gold medal!

Catherine Potvin gave a very good performance at the Canada Games. This 25 year-old athlete, who trains at the Baie-Comeau figure skating club, was eager to participate in the 41st Canada Games. After remarkable results at the Special Olympics National and Provincial Winter Games, she finished fifth in the women’s level III division in which she competed against seven other skaters. Catherine, we salute your sunny disposition and your great results!

We also want to mention the excellent work accomplished by their coach Michelle Mercier and by Michel Rhéaume who accompanied the athletes. Thanks to their dedication, Québec won the figure skating competition. They both knew how to encourage and motivate the athletes. We sincerely thank these volunteers who gave a lot of their time and energy. They have done a wonderful job with these athletes.

2005 Canada Summer Games in Regina

Four special athletes represented Québec at the Canada Games, which were held in Regina, Saskatchewan, in August 2005. Chantal Lapierre and Mélanie Giroux from Chaudière-Appalaches, Luc Gendron from Richelieu-Yamaska and Vincent Desrosiers from Central Québec are the four swimmers who were integrated into regular sports at these major Games!

Special thanks goes to Head Coaches, André Nolin and Sylvie Bélanger, for preparing and accompanying this group of special athletes on this adventure.

As in the case of the Québec Games, this was also the special athletes' second participation at the Canada Games in swimming. And it was with great pride that our special athletes returned to their home province of Québec and it was with a medal round his neck that Luc Gendron came home to his family.

Many thanks goes to the Québec Swimming Federation for coordinating this delegation and for accepting to include special athletes from beginning to end of the process.
